Why wait -personality (manic mixoff)

finally got a chance to sit down and do a ruff mix my ears are numb to the subtle adjustments needed so maybe a fresh pair of ears are needed. i mixed this in a gin blossom style.

UPDATED the out of tune backing vox Thank you red
fixed some things as Sam had mentioned this is version 3 now

did a bunch of work on the guitar parts added some stuff on the vocals and just did a bunch of things to try and make the sound get stronger as it goes. this is mix 4

I would tell you how to improve it because i know everything but i want to beat you so i will not. Just joking. not. yes i am . I actually seem to have numbed my ears as well . It is sounding pretty good to me and has given me some ideas. I think that the out of tune backing vocals is a little too … well out of tune though.

ahh yes i hear that too and that would be all my fault i added harmonizing on nectar 2 for the back vox that is a easy fix. I’m still thinking of things to do to the mix since we have until jan 31st imma take all that time to really think hard on this and experiment a bit. thanks for listening red.

This is a good, pretty well balanced mix to my ears. I think there are a couple things that could be improved where the balance is concerned (I think the acoustic guitars could be pulled in a bit, and the toms jump out during the fills) but that stuff is relatively minor and in the case of the acoustic guitars pretty subjective. However, there are two elements that I do find kind of distracting: the vocal effect (I think it’s a delay that’s causing the issue) is too long and washes out the vocals, especially when the BGV comes in; and the EQ on the snare sounds odd to me – it sounds like it has a nasal peak to it in the upper mids somewhere and it’s giving the drum a weird resonance. I’d take a look at those two items for sure.

Hope that was helpful!

yeah I have been really struggling with the snare to get the sound I want ill work on that, the tom I just need to balance the level of them I got the sound where I want, the balance between the acoustic and electrics I am trying to decide how I want to play them out to add some dynamics to the song there is certain parts of the acoustic that add some pretty ear candy so I think I will automate them parts and dial the rest back as just a base fill for the song. yeah I’m using the built in delay in nectar2 never used it before just got the program a few weeks ago so I’ll end up taking that off and using my usual vocal process on a aux track. Thank you for listening and its very helpful!!!:beerbang:

Yeah – keep working with Nectar, I think you’ll hit on something really good. The effect you have is cool, I think it’s just not quite meshing with the track yet.

As for the dynamics you mention – doing some automutes is a great idea! If you listen closely to the reference mix provided, there’s a fair bit of muting/editing going on in some of the guitar parts that I really think adds to the vibe and impact of the song (most of it is in the verses, from what I could tell.)

Did some creative guitar muting and adding parts along with some vocal effect to break up the song.

I almost wonder if that “phone” effect on the vocal should carry to the chorus? I think it’d feel a bit better.

well to be honest byran I think that effect has been used a lot so I wanted to just accent a part I felt would break up just a accent verses doing a full chorus or verse and it just felt right to do it at that part.

I think you’re on to something for sure. Maybe do it even shorter? A quick fade from phone to normal? I’m not sure. It may also be fine as is :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

indeed I could make it shorter but I only took 2 small bars so I felt that was pretty short since it was a quieter interlude then again what I do I know :stuck_out_tongue:

ooh! how about going from one to the other just in that first phrase? It could be REALLY cool since the acoustic guitar is also climbing right where I could see that working. It’d take some good automation, but I can almost hear it working perfectly in my head. Then again, I hear a lot in my head :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

sure that would be something different easy to do as well  ill work it out see what it sounds like.
no need for automation I made a double track so I can just go back and forth between the two.

@holster Bryan I did it and I think it has a kick ass cool effect glad you thought of it.!!!

that part starts @ 1:28

Hey Danny, just listening to the newest mix now. This is coming together nicely. I really love the way that last chorus “drops” in your mix - that’s my favourite part of the song, and a really critical thing to get right with regard to the long-term dynamics of the song.

This sounds very good all in all. I think you could improve the snare sound by boosting some lows around the 100 -250hz mark, as well as adding a little more bottom snare mic (I forgot,is there a bottom snare mic?) or if there isn’t, some ninja technique to fake it (Gated white noise can be very effective). Possibly the snare could use a little more at the top too - maybe around 7-10k.

TBH, I’m not super keen on the implementation of the telephone effect - I love the idea, but going back and forth sounds a little disjointed to my ear…these things are tricky to get right. Keep experimenting with it.

Nice work!

I had trouble getting my drums sounds out of this and yes there is a bottom snare mic so ill try and add a bit more of that in,I did sample the kick snare and toms so ill work on that snare a bit more see if I can squeeze out what @cptfiasco says makes you wanna take your cloths off to the song sounds…lol
Yeah It is a tricky thing to get the back and forth but maybe if I just did it on the frist part and left the rest radio then went back in the short two parts of that verse it might not be as busy but still give it a cool effect ill play around with it.
