What is Your Favorite Distortion Plugin?

I use it in para a fair bit and run the whole mix to it before the master bus .
About 20% and cranked about half way .sometimes just kick and bass

Thatā€™s a good idea! I may have to try that soon. Not sure why I hadnā€™t considered that. It might actually behave even better than some of those ā€œtapeā€ plugs.

Give it a try I think you will like what it does

Something Iā€™ve been doing for the last week in a similar way; Using Klanghelm MJUC compressor on the master bus, setting it below the point itā€™s doing much real gain reduction, and using the drive knob to dirty up the mix slightly. I wonder if that has a similar effect to what @takka360 is doing, though itā€™s not in parallel ofc.

Yep, I often do it this way too. It makes the whole mix fatter without killing the transients, a little bit goes a long wayā€¦

+1 for Decapitator! I had both Trash 2 and Saturn before I got it, and I although I used those I always found they had so many features I was getting sucked into a realm where I was tweaking forever and it took me a long time to get what I was looking for. Decapitator is still pretty flexible, but I find I can get to the sound Iā€™m looking for a lot faster. I use it mostly for parallel blend on drums (although I havenā€™t had it that long) but Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll try it out elsewhere. All the Soundtoys plugs sound really great, and the other two ā€œdistortionā€ plugins (Devil-Loc and Radiator) mentioned here are awesome as well! Be sure to try Devil-Loc on room mics, and Radiator used subtly on every channel is great for adding a vintage 60ā€™s sound to the mix.

Radiator on snare drum makes me pretty happy, also electric guitar bus. I only have the little version, so usually need to follow it with something to get the volume back downā€¦

That is a downside to Little Radiator ā€“ otherwise, it pretty much is the ā€œmeat and potatoesā€ version of the plug and does everything you really want/need it to do, IMO. I never wouldā€™ve gotten the full version except I decided to buy the full Soudtoys rack during a sale recently once I realized how much I like so many of their plugins, and of course that came with it.

I tend to lean towards Soundtoys Devil-Loc, Decapitator, and the Radiators. I also will sometimes go to UA Raw for bass. I have the Plug&Mix stuff, but havenā€™t utilized it much. All depends on the song and what I need from it.

Forgot about that radiator/altec unit. Its nice though lol.

Which UA for bass? I like the 1073 and 610. Sometimes the API vision. Oxford inflator too.

Yeah, I really like the Radiator on DI bass tracks in general.

I do like the 1073 on bass. But if i want distortion, I sometimes will just duplicate the bass track and throw the UA Raw (ProCo Rat pedal) on it and blend it in, barely, just to get it to cut through if needed.

Saturation Knob and Camel Crusher for more obvious dirt.
Ferrox for medium dirt
For gentle and mix dirt I used to like(actually LOVE) Ferric TDS by bootsy. But I stay away from 32 bit if I canā€¦
I thought that ferrox, reelbus or Kramer tape would take its place. But they donā€™t do the same thing. So I use no saturation on any busses for now.

I also bought Trash 2 at the super sale price, but I find Iā€™m still figuring it out. Eventually, Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll use it on something. What I usually reach for is Toneboosters Ferrox- Iā€™ve had that for years and like it either subtle or really pushing it. I like the IK 1073 plug a lot to for driving stuff in a mix.

Use that one a lot, myself.

+1. I use this a lot on bass tracks for grit and saturation.
