Trina Shoemaker's Best Mixing Tip

You can use a vst, but you have to actually run the track in real time from start to finish.

So I use Orban’s standalone, which checks files digitally in about 10 seconds - very handy for checking mp3s, wavs, anything really. Admittedly you have to export your mix and then measure the resultant file afterwards but for me it’s just a better workflow.

I reckon this would be my preference too. Thanks Adrian! Will definitely check this out.

Agreed - especially if you A/B - that’s where the power of referencing lies.

Hey, quick question Adrian-- I’m reading the Orban meter manual and it mentions how there could be issues monitoring an ASIO source, which is what I use. Do you also use ASIO and if so do you have to jump through any hoops (routing in the DSP or what have you) to deal with it? Thanks!

Edit: I think I already know the answer-- if analyzing rendered files instead of in real-time this does not matter. One merely compares the values from the files being analyzed irrespective of what interface was used to create them. Really slick how you can set it up to monitor folders and multiple song files.

Correct. The meter doesn’t care how the file was created.

Dave, I have noticed that too. Orban is just monitoring a sound source for audio signal. For some reason it doesn’t like ASIO as a source. It only works with my computer internal sound card. I haven’t delved deep into that, but so far I can’t use ASIO outputs with Orban.

Copy that Stan-- but I’m thinking it will be more useful to me running in standalone/offline mode anyway. I just downloaded it yesterday but haven’t fired it up yet. We shall see!
