There’s a thread of a similar name on the evil not-to-be-named forum that’s all about expensive gear, I love looking at pictures of drum kits so I thought I’d start this. Firstly, apologies for the horrible mess that is my room.
Picture of my last drum recording sess;
2x AT4050s getting the kit sound, just out from the floor and high tom, above the ride but below the two crashes. I liked this sound - they’re like overheads but with more shells, less cymbals, and a closer, more direct tone. Only slight annoyance is that the sustain of the kick drum comes through more in the high tom side, but the advantage of not needing tom mics at all was good.
The Session before that;
More standard overhead + close mics setup, the music is denser+ heavier here and I felt like I needed the control. Made a tent of sofa cushions + duvet in front of the bass drum so I could get the kick mic further out, which worked much better than I ever imagined. Cymbal spill was basically knocked out to the point where a +10dB boost at 7kHz wasn’t a problem!
