The Beginning of the End

I wrote this song yesterday and sang it today. It is a song that began with music and a temporary title, and then the words followed. I had no idea what the song was going to be about until after I wrote the first couplet, and even then I was surprised by where it went. I consider it tongue twistery riddly rock of sorts.

The Beginning of the End by Steve Bancroft

The beginning of the end is the end of the middle
I suppose it sounds like another silly riddle

The beginning of the middle is the end of the beginning
I suppose one thinks by then that one would know which side is winning

It would be nice but many times the end is a surprise
And many times the middle’s truth is hidden in disguise

And you wonder if you ever know what’s going on for sure
Whose heart and words are full of deception and whose is truly pure

Every beginning, middle and ending has a beginning, middle and end
And like a lazy river you meander around each weary bend

You can pretend to know what’s up ahead but you will just portend
Never knowing when you’ll get there until the final bend

But justice if it ever comes is saved for the last few pages
And until that time I wouldn’t recommend betting all your wages

For you might not like the outcome as the author has the right
To leave you hanging and lost for meaning in the darkest night

And aside from that potential ending the story may have no equal
And all will be forgiven if you know there is a sequel

The end of the middle is the beginning of the end
But the end of the end may very well be when a new beginning will begin

From the end of the beginning to the beginning of the ending
You can portend to know what lies ahead but you will just be pretending

I suppose it sounds just like another silly riddle
The beginning of the end is the end of the middle
