Taming rambunctious Kicks and Snares

I saw a few mentions of this in a few posts. Particularly in some of the mixoff and bash this threads. So I figured I would compile them into one new thread.
If you have a somewhat enthusiastic drummer who every once in a while nails the kick/snare 400% louder than all the other hits -or- keeps the beater/stick buried in the head for one or 2 hits, you know how distracting or disturbing it can be.
But rather than rely on track or buss compression to even it out, there are MANY things that can be done. And most of this can also be utilized to correct weak hits as well…

1- You can split out the offending hits and gain up an down as needed. This works OK for the occasional hit as to much of it will also modulate bleed and noise as well…
2- You can split out loud and soft hits throughout the track and then “normalize” all of them at once and then re-gain the group of them as required. The same caveat as above applies. Drastic swings in amplitude and a lot of leveling can have odd results. This is best suited for gentle leveling.
3- You can use a clipper like GClip on the waveform/item or an insert and render. Set the range to the highest peak that you want to let thru and render it in place or print it… whatever your daw allows. I’ve had very good results with GClip (free) as it works great on transients without sounding too unnatural.
4- You could try the same as above with a limiter. But I haven’t found a limiter that really does the job without softening the drum too much.
5- You could also do the same as #3 with Waves MaxxVolume or MV2. It can bring up the low level noise like #1 and #2. But it also tends to smooth/even out the low level stuff as well. Worth a shot if you have it… also try it on DI bass or slap happy bass…
6- You can split out and delete the offending hits and copy and paste “good hits” in their place. You just need to pay attention and line things up correctly. It can help if you lock into grid mode and cut to grid subdivisions. But you still have to make sure each one is precisely placed. If you have a lot of hits to correct, cut them all out and find one “middle of the road” hit, copy that and paste it into each hole in succession.
7- I have a few more that are basically variations of the above. But I’d like to hear any suggestions that we can add to this list. But please…" no get a better drummer"
carry on…

8- from coldRoom studios: One that I have used I got from @Paul999 - he suggested using Waves Bass Leveler to keep an overly dynamic snare in check - works quite well
9- (from me again) Use the live kick or snare to trigger a sample. You can use a less dynamic or even flatlined sample to blend/replace as you see fit.

Yeah, there is a kind of aural cognitive dissonance that occurs when the timbre of the hit doesn’t match the level it plays back at… I think this is often where a sample (even a one-shot sample) can work really well.

Yup… I thought that in a busy mix it might be masked. But somehow you feel it there. So I avoid that 'dissonance" any way I can… #6 above is the same basic principle as a sample. But you’re pulling a sample out of the same performance…

I use parallel limiting for this a lot and samples. I generally take samples of every kit before we start recording and use those when needed. its much easier when you have sections, like blast beats, are an example where almost every drummer I worked with falls off the striking charts and needs added volume. The drummers that strike very inconsistently are the ones that are really rough for me.

I’ve been using sound radix drum leveler. Crazy awesome plugin. If desired you can make every hit exactly the same volume.

I haven’t used samples in awhile because using drum leveler, drum atom and replacing the odd hit are so effective. I typically have quite a few snare tracks. At a minimum I’ll have Snare top, snare attack, snare bottom, snare room. The snare room will be in addition to room mics. It is usually a set of room mics that I will specifically key to snare to get the decay just right.

Drum leveler hS replaced the need for waves bass rider:)

I need to check that out! I hadn’t come across that yet
