According to the timer at the top of the page, I’ve been fiddling with these Slate thingy’s for a little over an hour. I took a basic acoustic guitar (Martin D-28 with Elixir stings, through a single Telefunken Copperhead TU-29 on axis @ 12th fret), running into an Avalon 737, and through a Motu HD converter. I threw some of the best UAD tube preamp clones in my library. I wanted to see if I could get the Slate plugins to match the clarity while adding warmth and density. I assumed I could get them relatively close. Not even in the ballpark. I’ll post the dry take if someone wants to attempt to do this with a Slate VMR, but there was no combination of anything in the slate bundle that I could get close. If someone can match the transparency and open top end of the UAD, let me know how you do it. Here’s the results.

@holster Actually already made a post about this. Cool though. I’m not a Steven Slate fan, but I’m sure it’ll rake in the bucks.
To me the tube preamp isn’t about dirt. Its easy to muck up a $10,000 microphone. Any chump, even Behringer and Art pres can do that. Its about pristine uber clean clarity with as much punch, definition, accuracy and headroom as you can get. In the tube pre’s I’ve worked with in real life, they add dimension and clarity. So does a good solid state pre. Just in a different way.
??? Haha. I didn’t get the memo. lol.
Yup. I see it. Shit… I totally missed that post.
Can a moderator @holster or whoever merge these threads together?
I posted elsewhere about the demise of Linplug because the founder reckons all the plug ins have been made and everything now is a variation on a theme.
Steven Slate is the ultimate in “I’m doing the same but mine is better” narcisstic VSt maker. Boring.
But Peter may have been wrong. I reckon some of the stuff our very own @bozmillar comes up with is VERY impressive and groundbreaking in the approach to problems.
And he’s busted the flush this time with his great big door thingie - if only he’d learn to spill.(sic)
