Road To Nowhere

I have kinda a lofi type rock song here, it’s an early mix so any ideas would be welcome.

I gave it a listen on the speaker in my iPhone. Nothing stood out as bad. I dig this track.

Also, I edited your post so the play button would show up.

Thanks, how did you do that?

@BigAlRocks is an admin/mod here so he has the power (insert evil laugh here)

But am I supposed to do something different when I upload to make the play button work? Or do I wait for an admin to fix it? It’s my first time uploading on the new site so I don’t know what I’m doing lol.

There was random text appended at the end of your link. I removed that and put the link on its own line and it just worked.

Oh ok cool. Thanks again!

Too loud and the center of the stereo field is really busy. I would limit it less and widen the sterero field.

Just my two cents.

Ok cool, I was just trying to win the loudness war but I guess I can give up:slight_smile: as far as widening what should I do? I have the guitars panned hard left and right already, but i do have plugins that have stereo widening and mid/side type stuff but I’m not really sure what to do with them.

I’m digging this sooo much!! Maybe it’s the vocals, but I can’t help but think it sounds like Rush playing punk… in so many cool ways. I’m loving that the song doesn’t drag on like some tend to do with this style. It’s a great length for this genre and it makes me want to start it over and listen again. That’s awesome!
I’ll try to give the mix a bashing when time permits but I just wanted let you know I’m digging this song. Good work!

Cool song! Seems like a Punk Rock style to me, maybe even very reminiscent of The Sex Pistols? The keyboard thingy though (what is that?) makes it a little more New Wave perhaps. I’m guessing you want it very energetic and raw, but my thought is that there is too much going on in the song or a really dense mix with some elements ‘masking’ others. To me it sounds like the whole stereo spectrum is taken up with something, in the middle, the edges, and everywhere in between. Maybe do the LCR (left, center, right) panning to separate things a bit. And check EQ spectrums on instruments and vocals. Cymbals and guitars (slightly fizzy) may be stepping on each other, and vocals and snare sound in about the same range in places. Do bandpass or opposed dips/boosts on each one, if necessary, so they don’t conflict. Use panning for that too, if there are conflicts, separate them from each other in the soundstage as much as possible. The keyboard thing is in that mids range with everything else, also.

It could be excessive crushing too, so start with easing the compression/limiting as Arber mentioned. It does seem like everything is smashed together in a “sound sandwich” and is causing homogeneity and a lack of clarity in the parts. These days a DR 9-10 or LUFS 9-10 is about all the loudness you may want or need. Get all that sorted before you add plugins for widening or mid/side. For this, a Punk song IMO, you don’t really need wider than you already have. Just separation and clarity of what is there. If you go for LCR panning, then mid/side might help place those even better. With mid/side you can process the center of the stereo image differently than the sides, so you can treat the kick/snare/bass/vocals one way (mid), and the guitars and other sounds panned out wide (side) another way.

Thanks guys sounds like I have some things to try. There is no keyboard in the song though Stan, it’s a guitar trick I read somewhere. I put it on the neck pickup with the tone turned all the way down, and through a fuzz pedal. Gives it a synthy sound, and there was also a chorus type effect after that. Anyways it’s a fun trick for weird sounds, and it’s nice to finally find a reason for neck pickups and tone knobs existing!

I like that trick!

Mix #2, Here is a tweaked and less crushed version.

I’m liking this version even more! Sounds great on my phone (so I can’t really bash the mix), so at least it translates great!

Its appropriately loud and brash, first impression: I like it.

thre’s three things I’d like to address with this mix.

I can hear the highest frequencies of the drums, the cymbals and the snare which sounds a bit papery, but there’s no punch to them, the kick is lost.

The vocals are a bit too bright, just a little, but along with the drums the highs can tire the ears.

I’m not a big fan of the bass line, its fine but I feel that it doesn’t add much to have it stand out so much in the mix, let the drums occupy more of that space.

Edit:

i just noticed you added a second version.
Yes, it’s a definitive improvement, I still have the same issue with the drums.

Great work!

Great tune and great energy!
Maybe a little too much energy. Gets a little tiring to be honest.
Might be worth it to take it down a notch and build it up.
I kinda agree with the stereo thing, too. But only because there is so much going down the center and in my face that I only faintly hear the edges. Which is pretty cool anyway.
But backing it down a bit might reveal plenty of stuff going on in stereo. So don’t go down the widening wabbit hole just yet… If you do it now, you’ll just have a phasey mess…
Have fun

It’s very punchy, I like it.
Maybe it’s too loud, but the song is not too long, so it’s good.

Great work.

Hey, this is a LOUD mix. The song is not my cup of tea but you did a good job. This is a dense song so probably not the easiest to mix. After a while it is a little harsh to my ears, but I’m thinking it’s more a matter of genre and personal taste than a mix issue.

Is the fade out at the end going to stay like this? It seems to occur randomly and abruptly.
