Following on from my other thread regarding stem separation, whereby I pulled a crappy old tune my band recorded live back in 1999 off the shelf and experimented with separating it out it it’s 4 basic elements (drums, vox, bass, guitars).
From there I decided to go ahead and re-record all new guitar tracks, which then lead me to hire a session drummer and recreate all the old drum tracks (no click) which he pulled off pretty goddam nicely considering he was just playing along to our old 1999 take, so at that point it became a no-brainer to redo the bass guitar, so i hired a session dude to help me with those (coincidentally the same cat who played on my last song Planet of the Slaves).
So now it’s really just a matter of getting vocals recorded, and it’s going to be a completely fresh recording rebuilt from the ground up.
I’ve found a vocalist on Fiverr who’s range really impressed me with his ability to sing clean as well as great sounding metal screams and growls, so I’ve consequently handed the track off to him, given him free reign to completely change up the vocal performance from the original (which was very mono tonal and devoid of melody) and put his own unique spin on things. So it’s just a matter of sitting back now and seeing what he comes up with.
At this point I’d really just be interested in seeing how the mix is sounding. I’ve always struggled in the past with live drums, but i have to say, I’m pretty happy with how these have turned out so far mix-wise, but that’s just my opinion. They could be hot garbage, but that’s why I’m here looking for a bit of critical feedback. So tear it apart, I’d be super interested to get a fresh take on how things are sounding thus far.
