Hello! I’m newbie here…one question - what desired volume of the mix? (in LUFS).
Hey, welcome abord.
I saw you’re very active since you logged on, congrats!!
To answer you question, I think there’s no right answer:
- whatever you like
- whatever you think the song need
- some kind of standards (-12, -13, -14…) or some K-scale standards
- something that matches some of your reference songs…
Nothing in particular to worry about to me.
Go on!!
As loud as a circus midget on the toilet after getting food poisoning from a bad burrito.
Or whatever you want. We’re not the FCC, thank God.
Yeap, thankfully!
Ashit Pai is a phony ex Verizon lawyer still in bed with them with his stupid mug, and Bryan Holster is a God among men.
I go anywhere from 16 for jazz type stuff up to sometimes 10 for rock in loudest parts, but depends on the track .12-14 is a pretty good aim
I usually drive my plugins on the master bus, and if it sounds too squashed, it’s too loud, that’s the only way I know if it’s too loud. And also referencing!
in theory loudness should be level matched at a mixing stage, as it is not about the loudness. A characteristic of a good mix is that it should sound open and clear at any volume level without straining the ears, too faint or too loud - both directions.
I submitted my mix without any kind of bouncing from outboard mastering setup. I do notice that some mixes submitted were too loud (for my taste). If I feel like reaching for my volume button once or twice in the same song, I feel like it would have been better if submitted unmastered as the wrong kind of mastering will wreck a perfectly good mix.
I make sure all my mixes are free of those pesky dynamics. DR 0-3 maximum! Just like Iggy Pop and Metallica!

Gain staging at mix is very important for a big dynamic mix. Lots of headroom
