Condenser mic question

I have a condenser mic and it came with a really cool bungy chord holder to suspend the mic in. Does a condenser mic have to be on that cage? My assumption is that keeps it from touching anything to keep it from picking up some kind of static.

Ah! The shock mount. Actually, if I need to get the mic in a tight spot or something Iā€™ll go without the shock mount, so they arenā€™t ā€˜requiredā€™. However, they are generally handy as they reduce noise from someone tapping their foot on the floor near the bottom of the mic stand.

Try with and without, youā€™ll notice the difference!

Without the shock mount, a lot of condenser mics are really sensitive to vibrations on the mic stand. Tap the mic stand with and without the shock mount and you will probably hear a big difference. But if that is something you are not worried about, then the shock mount probably isnā€™t doing much.

If you donā€™t already have a ā€œpop filterā€ for the mic, it might be a good idea to get one. That doesnā€™t pertain to the shock mount at all, just thought Iā€™d mention it. It helps reduce plosives, and prevents ā€œspittleā€ from hitting the mic. It also serves as a reference point for mic distance during a performance.

Yeah, LDCā€™s are super sensitive, I dare you to try and hand hold it! What kind did you get? I look forward to hearing what you think of it.

I have a AKG C 3000b mic. I like it. But it never stays in the cage as it seems to keep popping a bungy cord. :smirk:

Did you buy it used? If new, it should be under warranty and the mfr should replace it.

I bought it used a long time ago. I did see Home Depot sells a bunch of small bungee chords. I think I will buy some and try to tighten it up.

A fellow DIYer. We have quite of few of those here! :+1:

I use hair bands from the dollar store, or my kids hair stuff drawer.
