I wish this was just a song, but it is totally true. I wrote this in memory of my wife’s Aunt Lawana who died within 2 weeks of the election of covid pneumonia. It isn’t uplifting. That song was Postponed to 2021.
This song is about the people who are dying because of mask deniers. People who protest it is their god given right to not wear a mask or social distance. People who probably won’t die from getting it but who are responsible for killing as many people a day as of last week as died on 911.
It shocks me that we have surpassed the number of US soldiers who died in WWII in 4 years in this one year.
I am beyond disappointed in the maskless killers who walk among us. I am disgusted. It is not about politics and freedom whatsoever. It is about selfish stupidity.
It is wonderful a vaccine is out there, but why should people die at 3000 per day for two more months?
I know why. And that will be their legacy, even if they never develop a conscience.
But I am here asking for your music advice. And I hope your stories aren’t so sad.
steban,
Thank you for the reviews! Now your song: sorry to hear about your wife’s aunt. I’m not wild about wearing a mask, but I do it anyway when I’m outside of my home and I get within 10+ feet of others. I think these are some of your better vocals, they remind me of Roger Waters from Pink Floyd (per usual). Everything sounds very good instrumentally, it seems you’re getting into more complex effects than perhaps you have in the past. A moving song. I’ve only known of one person that has died of covid; someone I’ve never met before, my boss’s father (who I’m guessing was over 80 years old). I’ve known several others that have gotten covid, but their symptoms were not that bad fortunately. Carry on my friend, and keep making your music man!
Hi Steban - This is a very touching song. I like the guitar sounds and the overall mix is good. You have more of a spoken word approach which works quite well for the most part. Around 4 minutes the guitars and vocals are interfering with each other which makes it hard to appreciate what you have there; the song seems to work best when the vocals alternate with the guitars.
The change at 5:30 is very effective. Changes like that are sign posts that help us follow what you are doing; I think having more of those would help to hold our attention with this song.
Thanks for listening, @takka360, @FluteCafe, @aaron_aardvark and @ingolee. I am currently having computer issues still so I won’t be too quick addressing the interfering guitars and vocals at the 4 minutes mark, I’m just glad I can respond here.
Honestly I felt this was going to be my last Covid inspired song, but the way things are going in the world it probably won’t. It really struck me how this past Monday marked the Electoral College vote, the first vaccines rolled out, and the 300,000 US deaths milestone. One might think all that would help bring us all together a little bit, and I can’t understand what is going on between McConnell and Trump and the GOP. So many Republicans call fellow Republicans who are just doing their job RINOs. I call those who call out RINOs CINOs (Conservative in name only) because they have abandoned traditional conservative values in favor of blind loyalty.
Maybe this will change next year, but I fear the vaccine won’t cure the CINOs.
Hi Steve, very sorry for your loss - that’s a tragic story indeed. Sometimes music is the best therapy. I must admit, it’s surreal to be outside looking in at what has happened in the US over the past year.
We are very fortunate in Australia to have a very sparse population, so I think that may have played not an insignificant role in keeping the death toll down and the infections contained. However, I get the impression Australians in general have a very different attitude toward personal rights vs community good. (Obviously not all, though…) By and large, most here were pretty compliant, even with the strictest of lockdown conditions… so that helped curb the spread a LOT.
Onto the song… I can definitely hear a Roger Waters influence there. The guitar in the left channel is obscuring the vocals at times - maybe a little more control there might be in order.
About the only positive aspect of this whole worldwide tragedy is that it has inspired a lot of creativity.
I really hope things improve over there in the US soon - My wife and I travelled over there on the east coast in 2014 and on the west coast in 2019. We would love to go back again, because it truly is a beautiful country with an incredible range of wondrous countryside. We loved it.
Thanks, Andrew. It is surreal here as well as so many here don’t see the death except as a number on TV. 308,000 total as of today!
Americans this year were so split along party lines by Trump and Fox News on the science, which is beyond the usual craziness. But the impact of that on noncompliance with masks and social distancing has been and still is devastating. You probably don’t see the news today in Australia of the newly exposed emails from September pushing a herd immunity strategy on the CDC. You probably don’t see it here if you only watch Fox.
Once my PC is fixed, I will address that. Roger Waters is a fair compliment for me! He is brilliant but a bit dismal as he confronts serious subject matter.
We share that sentiment. Looks like late summer 2021 we might be able to travel again safely, sooner if you are vaccinated. Music is meanwhile therapeutic inspiration.
