Sorry, I’ve been lurking in the background but haven’t contributed much for a while. Here’s a new tune I’ve been playing around with. It’s kind of a tribute to the style of our dearly departed Jeff Beck, and I’m trying to decide to keep it as an instrumental, or work a vocal track into it. All tracks were recorded using Scuffham amps with EZ drummer 2, and it’s a static mix at this point. You are welcome to bash it and tell me if it holds up as an instrumental, or if a vocal is needed to carry it. Thanks for listening, I’ll try to get back into being a more active member as I’m able.
Love this, Bob! I love your bluesy phrasing. I think it totally works as an instrumental. There is a lot of variety, and the parts feel very melodic, with good thematic development. Nice!
PS. HUGE Jeff Beck fan here - saw him twice in one weekend when he came here to Oz. I’m really glad I did - he was mesmerising!
Thanks, Andrew.
I only had one opportunity to see him, and his musicality floored me. He was completely connected to his instrument and whatever he played just flowed right through him. One of a kind.
I like it; I don’t think it needs a vocal but that’s your call. Great sound and playing. I’d rather hear some more riffing than a repeat of the B part at 2:21, it’s just my 2 cents but that part needs more development, it’s too heavy for the rest of the song. Good stuff!
Thanks for listening! I was thinking about bringing a buddy of mine to do a growling Hammond organ solo over both of the B parts to spice them up.
That would be fantastic! And it would break things up a bit and create even more interest in my opinion. I agree with @ColdRoomStudio about your phrasing. You really have some great blues sensibility. Something I wish I was better was at.
Great to see you on @StylesBitchley!
StylesBitchley,
Some good vocals surely wouldn’t hurt, but it sounds quite good by itself! Very nice bluesy guitar playing! Though it sounds like the ending gets abruptly faded out too quickly.
Thanks very much, Aaron. I agree with you on the ending. When I get a real drum track in there. I’ll make it a little more natural.
Thanks for the listen!
Sounds good to me. I don’t think it really needs vocals. The production and overall mixing does remind me of Jeff’s guitar shop. I think some of the elements could use some EQ cuts because the guitars are standing out a bit too much, but if this is just a static mix, it is honestly pretty good. I like the ideas and developments.
I agree it could use some polish and movement in the mix, but I haven’t done any automation, and what you’re hearing is just straight levels mixed and panned on a decent set of headphones. I’m still waiting on a live drum track and some Hammond organ to spruce it up, at which point I’ll do a remix.
Thanks for listening!
