Here’s something I did to get my ears away from the mixoff track…
I don’t see a sound file Rich…
sounds great! Really liked the guitar solo!!
??? I see/hear it… no clue
Ah, there it is now-- clicking Play!
Rich! I absolutely love this tune and this mix. Beautiful work.
On the vocal, the combined intimacy and immediacy, where the dryness contrasts with the fx on the guitars and other instrumentation, works really well. Super talented vocalist too. Who is this btw?
In general, it’s great instrumentation, a super cool vibe. Lovely loping tempo and rhythm.
Awesome drum sounds-- that ride(?) with the drums, right in my face, I love it. Just outstanding clarity in the drums.
Really love the guitar tones on that solo and fabulous playing too. Just enough with the flourishes without being overly showy.
Ultra cool breakdown just past 3 min… outstanding definition of bass, guitar, drums, all clear, all separate but working great together.
I would not change a thing on this mix. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks a bunch, Buddy. The funny thing is that I normally hate that bouncy ride tone and style in “real life” So I had fight the urge to destroy it in this mix…
I’m glad it translated. Exactly what I was going for. And it was hard fought at that. Lots of proximity and lip noises. Probably compresses pretty hard going in.
Sadly I have no clue who the vocalist is or the band name… I just got a zip file…
Right off the bat, I love the vocal treatment on that mix.
Great ear candies all over, nice tones on the guitars, bass present just enough but not overtly (works well in that tune). The drums sound almost mono though, and although I don’t like extra wide drums with toms panned full left and right, I’m missing a little bit of width here…
A tiny nitpick too: I think the two guitars in the intro could have been better merged though.
But the start of the show (and rightly so) is the vocal and you’ve featured them really really well, so everything else is probably secondary.
Great job! :beerbang:
Loving this Rich. Some really nice textures and fx.
Vocal tones are superb - they really helped tell the songs story, which is No. 1 priority in my book.
You seem to have pushed the envelope just far enough to get away with some pretty tangy sounds, yet it doesn’t sound out of place or like you are trying too hard. Sweet mix!
Thank you so much!
I hear you on the drum width… It’s funny… After TALKING about it so much on 2 recent forum posts, I realized that I don’t really care that much about width… That’s actually a little harsh way to put it. But I don’t really approach it like that when mixing. I want depth more than width and I want the drums placed (front to back) where they seem appropriate.
On this one the snare mic is sucking in the hat and ride and pulling everything mono. That will usually bug me to no end. I always do one hard gated snare and one more open. In this mix one of the final touches was to ditch the gate as it was pulling the snare and whole kit more forward than I wanted… Oh well… maybe it will start to bug me more and I’ll have to do something about it…[quote=“ptalbot, post:8, topic:498”]
I think the two guitars in the intro could have been better merged though

I’m not quite sure what you mean… But I am intrigued. can you please expand on this?
I really appreciate the feedback
thanks again

Fair enough. As I said it’s a small nitpick, but it kinda bugged me in the intro as these guitars are alone and exposed and it’s the start of the song, so you want to “give a good first impression” so to speak.
These 2 guitars have quite a different sound. The first one doing these arpeggios is rather dark, and when the second guitar comes in with the strummed chord, it sounds very bright and a bit jarring (to me). I think it could enter more gradually, perhaps you could lower the level of the first chord, or you could automate a low-pass filter to bring its brightness slowly and to me it would “integrate” better.
Not sure it makes sense but that was the nitpick I had, I wanted to mention it because it’s right at the start and it startled me (see what I did here! )
It doesn’t take much from the mix though which is really good, especially the vocal treatment, so tasty!
this is awesome!the vocal effects and subtle tails are amazing. really polished
if anything the snare sounds a bit boxy during the guitar solo like the guitar is eating up all the mids. only thing i can pic out. nice job
OK … now I get it. Yup… that gtr being so exposed had a ton of hiss and I just lowpassed it while it was exposed. Don’t think I did anything to the 2nd gtr. But I’m sure I could do something to have them play more nicely together
thanks a lot, buddy…
Wow… good ear LazyE! I can fix that. There were some bad/weak snare hits in there. I copy/pasted a couple over and evened them all out with clip gain. I thought that I got away with it…
Thanks, Buddy
rich
Nice clean indie production well done lots to like about this
How’s this:
love that dry vocal…wow Sounds like you are whispering in my ear. ha ha
Great attitude. nice lift in the chorus. Guitar sounds like some old leads I used to use…cool. Love when it comes down You can sing young lady. Congrats
Sincerely
Paul
Thanks a lot, feaker Much appreciated.
As I said in another post somewhere… sometimes it takes a lot of processing to make something sound “bone-dry”
Guitars in the intro sound more together.
Still loving the vocal treatment on this. Top job! :beerbang:
