I’m hereby submitting a mix of the Personality that I’ve been working on for a while. Please be brutally honest but also remember this would be the first actual professionally recorded song I’ve tried to mix. At this moment I’m in that space where I’ve heard the song so often, I now can’t tell what’s good or what’s bad. To bash myself for a minute, I know the following things need improvement, but not what I can do to improve them:
The snare - it has a snap, but it seems to be missing something
The drums are just not gelling on any speaker I listen to, but again, I just don’t have the experience to know why.
I think the overall level and panning of the guitars is ok, I’ve been brave and added a wahwah to the lead
The vocals are dryer than the original, which was intentional, and the background vocals have some reverb and I think phaser set on them
Any and all advice is good - I’m not sure I’ll actually enter the contest on the basis of what I’m hearing from my speakers…
I didnt mix this song myself so im not THAT familiar with it
only thing that stood out to me was the dryness of the lead vocal. maybe in the verse that is fine, but I personally think it needed something to pick it up a bit in the chorus even before the background vox came in. the bgv gave a huge lift but I think I would have had at least a delay or something on the lead vocal as well
only other thing that sort of jumped out was the acoustic fill around 1:46 ish…seemed way too loud and up front IMO
Really appreciate the feedback. Being the first live recording I’ve ever dealt with I’m in completely new territory. I’ll do something with the vocals - I also really don’t know what I’m doing with voices - I’ve never had to deal with them before! I’ll take your feedback and work on the mix a little more. A quick question - how did the drums sound? I worked hard on those but am not 100% happy with the result.
Im on cans so correct me if im wrong: Drums sound fat and nice! Vocals need compression and you have de-essed too much. Wah-wah is cool. A reverb on send for vocals would be nice. If you are a compressophob then automate volume to be lower on a few yells during chorus that jump out of the mix. Otherwise sounds fine!
I’m glad the drums sound good. They became a bit of an obsession while I was mixing. I hear what you’re saying about the vocals. I didn’t put a de esser on the vocals - so something I’ve done has affected them negatively. To my ears there’s some distortion going on during the choruses. I’ll have a go at fixing those things tonight. Appreciate the feedback!
