Here is one of my favorite mixes of a tune by Bobby Nobody.
I’d love to mix more of his stuff.
I can see (hear) why you’d love to mix more of his stuff. Quite talented! Better get him over here to join the fun!
I feel like there’s a disconnect between the vocals and the rest of the mix. It feels like they were recorded and mixed completely independently from each other. I don’t hear issues with the arrangement or the performances, but it has sort of a karaoke feel to it. I hope that didn’t come out wrong because, like I said, the performance sounds great, but it sounds like you have an instrumental track and you put vocals on top of it.
Now, how to actually combat that? I’m not 100% sure, but I think it’s something to be aware of that the mix is conveying.
It’s possible that the vocals are just too loud, especially the “ear candy” vocals. The background vox should be noticed, but I think they draw too much attention to themselves. Maybe just turning the vox down in general would help it sit better in the mix.
Maybe we can keep reaching out to Mike Senior. This was one of his mix rescue artists. When I google Bobby Nobody, all I get is other folks’ mixes of this song. Maybe Mr Senior can get us more files.
Yup… agreed. I guess I didn’t want anything to get missed. Got a pretty stiff parallel channel on the LV. Could probably back that down a bit… Thanks for the input!
Have fun

I agree with Boz on the vocals, they are out there pretty good. I think some of it is also due to the treatment on the vocals; the instruments sound great by themselves but don’t glue together with the sound of the vocals, which again, by themselves, sound great. I got a big smile from the sound of the bass, it has a nice “farty” tone to it that is perfect for the song. You did a great job that could easily be brought up a level by making everything mesh together just a touch more.
Sound good, this song is really entraining (I’m not sure it’s the good word:pensive:)
Like Boz said, maybe the vocals are too loud otherwise I find the instruments very good.
Great job!
Revised mix
Vocals are still “loud”. But hopefully with purpose.
Found a couple of things:
1- One of my reverb sends was still feeding 100% of the dry signal to the return. If you ever want to disconnect something from a mix, try that…
2- I had a pretty stiff RVox feeding an fx that was NOT supposed to route to the master…
Just fixing those above took care of 90% of the issue. Then I just went back thru and re-tweaked a bit. I had made all of m automation decisions based upon the faulty settings and ended up undoing 90% of the automation…
Man, those vocals are still really loud. I feel like you could take another 3-4 dB off of them and still be on the loud end.
It sounds more cohesive this time around. The vocals are still out there, but if you’re listening at pretty good level they aren’t too far out of line. Everything sounds great and it is a very infectious song with the mix adding to the energy.
Yup… can’t get away from that at the moment, I guess… I’ll let it stew for a while and come back to it at a later date.
Thanks, Boz!
