My earliest eye opener was my dad’s collection of honkytonk piano, specifically, a guy named Frankie Carle. That got me digging through my dad’s music and I found Floyd Cramer (Last Date et al). - Remember coming unglued and almost wetting myself meeting Earl Wild (I think I was 9). One recital I was told after the fact that Van Cliburn had been in attendance…glad it was AFTER.
Had encephalitis when I was 17 (Junior year) and had to learn everything all over again. Could play music, but didn’t know any of the theory…I was HIGHLY discouraged to hear how well I played at age 12, and yet by 18 I couldn’t get muscle control nor mental focus to attain that level again. Still haven’t, and all the tapes of me playing (classical as well as jazz and rock) went the way of the wind when my mom and dad died within three months while I was in the process of moving 3100 miles away. The people who came and did the estate just pitched all of mom’s home recorded tapes…
