Just got the final mix in from the mix engineer Ilarion I hired on Fiverr, and WOW, I’m actually a little bit speechless to be honest, the clarity and punch he’s manged to pack into the mix, it’s really something else.
If you’re ever looking for a rock/metal-centric mix engineer I really couldn’t recommend this dude highly enough, and especially when you take into consideration his rates which were around $145 AUD (including a $20 tip) it’s mind blowing.
I’ll leave a link to his page below.
Massive shout out to everyone who chimed in and gave their 2-cents on this track, it REALLY did help in getting things over the finish line.
Just mastering to go now and that will be a wrap, phew.
Cheers ya’ll

The flamenco guitar is a fantastic last minute inclusion. I think you got your engineering money’s worth, my friend! You deserve to be very proud of this song.

Hey thanks a lot @steban yeah I think so too, it was worth going the final step for the benefit of the song, cheers mate.

Congrats on a great track. If you havent sent it out to mastering yet, there are still some issues in the mix that should be addressed on the mix side of things rather than post. Though a mastering engineer can rectify them.
I am not sure if the mix was done on headphones as I hear some small issues that I normally hear in mixes that were done on headphones or (simulated environments) and not properly scaled on midfields.

The clarity is great definitely, because the mix is pretty wide and sounds very clear on cans. On speakers it thins out considerably with some elements getting stretched and lost.
The kick is great, though it clicks at times a bit too hard and the toms poke through.

The flamenco parts are STELLAR, and the best part of the mix.

the heavy metal elements are great on cans, but fall apart a bit on bigger speakers. Though marginally.
I think a bit of low-mid saturation and tightening can do the trick

EDIT: realized I am a bit late to the party as the song is final. Song is still great  we can always nitpick everything to eternity in any song. Congrats on finalizing the track, great work everyone involved!

I was going to start off by saying I am late to the party but FluteCafe used that line already. So, leaving a comment like way later than everyone else, I listened to the first posted version and then the last version and it seems like the original version has more life, more bass and color. The final one is tight for sure, and I love the classical guitar, this is a song to really be proud of. Great job.

Haha no probs, I really appreciate you taking the time to have a listen and share your wisdom all the same.
I’m not 100% sure what Illarion (the mixer) was listening on when he mixed this, but looking at his studio setup I’m guessing it was a combination of both.
It really is such an important part of mixing trying to nail the translation between different listening environments, as you say, especially going from headphones to monitors.
I find snare in particular can be quite deceiving in that regard, just when you think you have the perfect amount of low-mid body listening in the cans, you switch over to monitors only to discover it sounds tubby and intrusive.
Finding that happy balance between the two environments is the key I guess, and I freely admit it’s not something I’ve quite figured out yet.
Thanks Michelle.

Hey there James, late to the party or not i really appreciate your feedback all the same. Yep there were most definitely some fairly considerable transformations from the first iteration to the last, but personally I think the final outcome far exceeds the original in both bass, life and color.
Thanks a lot dude.

A pretty amusing little side story relating to this song. I stumbled across a channel by the name of Audio Bros Podcast, and they take song submissions (mostly rock & metal), air them on their Youtube livestream and then offer feedback on the mix and composition, and in some cases do a ‘mix renovation’.
So for laughs I dropped a video link in their Discord channel, and kind of forgot about it and missed the original livestream where they played the tune and shared their thoughts.
It was pretty funny, and they were really cool dudes about the whole thing despite me being a no-show.
It’s only a small channel, but they’re super cool cats and it’s a great avenue for anyone looking for a bit of additional feedback on a mix or arrangement.

These guys were cool, I was nervous at first when they went all over your name but I could see their faces once the song started playing that they knew they like this song already. Awesome job.

It does have a ‘tight’ feeling to it. The high frequency emphasis is a bit much for me, but I’m an “old school” analog guy in many respects.

That’s a good point, in that in my youth I experienced a real Flamenco guitar and clavinets (Edit: Castanets) performance in Torremolinos, Spain. And this seems quite close. This insert is fairly brief, about 2:20-2:53.

They loved your ‘name’. It’s nice to have some recognition, no matter the source.

They thought the name was an FBI ‘troll’.

Yeah, luckily I knew the music these guys were listening to, mixing and reviewing prior to sending them over the track so i wasn’t really that surprised that they were digging it, and they were cool about the whole Terry Hesticles thing hehe.

There was something about “The Police” (band) and the CIA, I think they were even on CIA records, something to do with Stewart Copeland (the drummer)? Just a historical note.

Yeah, I guess we’re all wondering about the name. The inference is quite obvious, but an explanation might be in order. :slightly_smiling_face:

What’s to explain, I’m immature and I find it amusing. End of story haha.

Ha, that’s what I thought, we’ll just call you “Hairy”.

Man, you can call me anything you like, just don’t call me late for dinner

We won’t. Food is good, good for life. Particularly “keto” as I see it. Eat meat. Even if the globalists tell you not to.

Absolutely, not only do I eat meat, I raise it, albeit on a tiny scale.

That’s awesome! Every bit of self-sufficiency helps. Do you butcher (process) it yourself also? I learned a bit from watching The Bearded Butchers YouTube channel, but haven’t done anything fancier than breaking down a tenderloin into filets.
