Jonathan, though I see your points and totally accept what you're saying, I don't believe you are making the right comparison. There are musical technologies that are replacing musicians and people are creating songs without having to know anything. This devalues music considerably in my opinion.
I mentioned that I wasn't down with that, but accepted it and appreciated that people have learned how to utilize technology. I'll give you a few examples of things that I believe technology is ruining.
Check out prominy.com and listen to the guitar work done on keyboards. It's realistic enough to where a studio would not need to hire a real guitar player. Try to listen without watching the videos and it will appear more real.
EZDrummer and all the drum modules have made drums sound so good, you no longer need to mic a kit or know how to play. It makes a clueless dude that doesn't know anything about recording have great sound with little to no work.
Scarbee bass, mastering programs, the list goes on and on. Anyone can go out to Sam Ash and buy some software and have decent results. This has crushed the small studio business.
Techniques like side chaining compression are dumbing down people actually learning how to deal with frequency masking....great, we'll let the kick and bass take.turns so they stay out of each others way and call it a day. No one listens hard enough to realize the bass is not quite audible every once in a while anyway.
Yeah, I blame technology and people using the industry to make money while degrading parts of it. I have specialty recording services in my business so thankfully I'm not as affected as others. But I'd be lying to you if I told you this new stuff hasn't affected me in quite a few ways. It takes both the musician and the engineer out of the picture.
Why should I not have a problem with this? Why should the kid next door be able to go to San ash and buy a few things and have good enough for demo sound while he decides he shouldn't come to me anymore?
Why should I agree that a keyboard and guitar samples can replace me? Drums that replace drummers?.I accept it but I don't have to agree with it. It has cost people jobs in the little leagues. Sure the big guys will always use real musicians and instruments, but the little studios are perishing.
So all the studios close once the technology gets to an even higher place. I just don't think that's right. I accept that it will happen but I hate that technology is allowing it to happen this way.
There's nothing else to blame. It sure isn't my fault? I've done my best to be different and provide services in this field that not many are offering just to stay afloat while using some of the new technology to save clients money when possible. And when I'm hired to play instruments, I deliver the goods all across the board at all times.
Don't have the money for a real drummer? Bfd, superior, Steven slate or ezd are on hand. My drummer friend or me because I too play drums loses loses a job. This happens more and more because the musician must be paid for their time and experience, right?
Can't hire a piano player....I got stuff for that. It saves money and costs someone a job for being able to really play something. Yes, I totally blame technology for this and the lack of caring and thinking ahead from those creating it.
They probably didn't think their great creation may cost their kid a job someday. Or...they simply made enough to where their kid doesn't have to work. Whatever the case, studios and engineers all over have felt the effects of technology. Though it may never replace the pro engineer and player, good demos can get you a deal today.
Mediocre is now acceptable. So the studio owner is stuck with recording pros that give a crap. And they seem.to be dwindling down unless you have a name. The majority of the studio business is the rap, little kid rock bands and karaoke singers.
None of them need a studio any longer. Do you blame the studio for charging too much? I don't. I'm worth every penny I charge and I'd rather work at burger king than drop my prices. And maybe I'll have to wear the crown someday.
But if I do, I blame the creations of technology allowing people to do everything themselves. Even at decent quality, they've lowered quality because they will not get the quality someone like me will get them. But at the end of the day, no one cares and they don't need my quality. Quality isn't important. They live on ear buds for God sakes...that says it all.
I'm a tech guy and think for the most part, other than this world and its leaders sucking ass, it's a good time to be alive. I love some of the new stuff. I love some evolution, but I do not like anything that puts people out of a job. And some of this stuff degrades quality because the users are not experienced. But they don't care....so it is what it is. See my point?
